Technetium, Tc, has an atomic number of 43. It is a transition metal. It is the first element with no stable isotopes.
Technetium was observed in the spectra of red giant stars (technically, second-ascent red giants) in 1952. At that time, it was generally accepted that hydrogen fusion powered the sun, and physicists were entertaining the idea that larger elements were also produced in stars. It was also generally accepted that red giants are old stars, far too old for them to have any primordial Tc. Observation of Tc lines in a stars spectrum, then, meant that the star was synthesizing it. Theorists, from that point on, had a way to tie their ideas to observable phenomena.
