Potassium (K) is an alkali metal with the atomic number 19. It is similar to sodium, rubidium and cesium. When potassium is placed in water it explodes due to its extreme reactivity.
Potassium is a common element, many of whose compounds dissolve readily in water. As life emerged on this planet, it coped with, and eventually incorporated those elements. Potassium, as a result, has become essential to the metabolisms of many creatures, notably humans.
Potassium is particularly abundant in bananas. One isotope of potassium, K 40, is a primordial radioactive nuclide, which means bananas are slightly more radioactive than other foods. This has led to an unofficial, but useful, definition of the "banana equivalent dose" for measuring low levels of radiation exposure.
