Nickel (Ni) has a atomic number of 28 and has a atomic mass of 58.6934 ± 0.0002 u. It's classified as a Transition Metal.

Nickel is widely used in iron-based alloys, and is often the base metal in allows designed for corrosion resistance or high-temperature application.

The coin known as a "nickel" is actually made from a 75% Cu, 25% Ni alloy.

Z, N = 28 marks a shell closure for both neutrons and protons. 56Ni is, therefore, doubly-magic. Despite this, it is unstable, decaying to 56Co and then to 56Fe. This isotope forms in abundance when "silicon group" elements, mainly Si & S, are exposed to high temperature at high density. When this occurs in a massive star, reaction products build up to form an "iron" core which grows until it collapses into a neutron star, taking most of the 56Ni with it - but not all. When this occurs due to accumulation of matter on the surface of a massive white dwarf, silicon burning will be explosive. The star turns into a cloud of expanding gas. Both classes of events are called supernovae, and they're among the most luminous objects in the universe. Much of the light produced by either type of supernova results from decay of 56Ni into 56Fe.
