Chlorine is a poisonous halogen in group 17 and period 3. Under normal conditions, it is a greenish yellow gas. It is highly reactive and is a strong oxidizing agent. It has the highest electron affinity and the third highest electronegativity of any element.
It is often used in swimming pools as a disinfectant.
