Calcium (Ca) is the 20th element on the periodic table. It is also the 3rd alkaline earth metal of the periodic table. It is the fifth most abundant element in earth's crust.
Chemical properties[]
Calcium carbonate Ca(CO3) is the base mineral in limestone, which accounts for about 1/4 of the sedimentary rocks in earth's crust. What makes that a bit surprising is that much of that limestone is the compressed shells of microorganisms. Perhaps more than any other element, calcium links the biological and mineral worlds.
Uses[]
Calcium metal itself isn't used often, as it is difficult to store and that it is really reactive. However, compounds of calcium such as calcium salts are commonly used in the laboratory. Also, calcium in the form of calcium phosphate is found inside bones and teeth.
An isotope of calcium, Ca 48, was used to discover Hs and all the elements from Cn to Og.
